Samsung Is Preparing 2 More Foldable Models Of Smartphone

Samsung Electronics is working on a pair of brand new smartphones which are foldable to follow its Galaxy Fold, seeking to seize an early lead in the new segment of the market.

The biggest South Korean manufacturer of smartphones is said to be developing a device a clamshell, and another which folds away from the user same as Huawei Technologies Mate X, people familiar with the subject matter said, asking not to be identified discussing the internal plans of the company. The $1,980 (roughly Rs. 1.4 lakhs) Galaxy Fold that Samsung Electronics plans to release in April fold inward like a notebook register.

A spokeswoman for Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung company declined to comment on plans for new foldable smartphones.

Samsung generally plans to uncover the vertically folding smartphone late this year or early next year, and is using several mock-ups to fine-tune the design structure, the people said. The device is designed with an extra screen present on the outside, but the manufacturer may remove this screen depending on how the users respond to a similar display on the Samsung Galaxy Fold, they said.

The out folding gadget, which already exists as a prototype model after being considered as Samsung’s first foldable device ever, will roll out afterward, said, people. It will be thinner because it has no extra screen attached, they said.

Samsung may also incorporate a fingerprint sensor which is in-display for its foldable lineup, as it did for the Samsung Galaxy S10 model announced last month, they said.

While Samsung works on various new models, it is also trying to improve the durability of the display of Samsung Galaxy Fold. They are trying to eliminate a crease which appears on the panel after it has been folded about approximately 10,000 times, and Samsung Electronics is considering offering free screen replacements after releasing the product, some people said.

The screen imperfection of Galaxy Fold develops on a protective film covering the sensor of touch bonded with the display underneath, the person said. That is one reason why Samsung kept the smartphone inside a glass case in Barcelona at MWC last month, the person said. Spokeswoman of Samsung said the Galaxy Fold was displayed that way as it wanted much more attention on the soon-to-be-launched Samsung Galaxy S10, not because there was an issue with the quality of the foldable device.

Samsung electronics forecasts production of at least 1 million foldable smartphones this year. The launch of the device comes as the biggest phone maker in the world tries to lure back users who have become used to incremental upgrades and are being wooed by lower-priced smartphones, Chinese manufacturers.

Samsung Electronics, which also produces televisions and memory chips, make the foldable displays itself and supplies technology to rivals such as Sony and Apple. The South Korean organization shipped 291.3 million smartphones last year while Huawei sold 205.8 million, according to Analytics. Samsung electronics will probably sell more than 40 million units of its flagship Samsung Galaxy S10 in the very first year of release, according to Counterpoint.
