The Popular RPG Game Dragon’s Dogma is getting a Netflix anime
Netflix has just announced a handful of its new upcoming anime projects, and among them is “an original game anime series” based on the RPG game Dragon’s Dogma. For the uninitiated, Dragon’s Dogma is a cult open world RPG game originally released in 2012 by Capcom company and directed by Hideaki Itsuno of Devil May Cry game. It is very good.
Netflix recently announced that it will partner with Sublimation for the anime series, with the Representative Director of that organization, Atsushi Koishikawa, writing that it is “excited to bring our unique cel-shaded animation which carries hand-drawn textures to anime fans around the globe.”
The short summary also casts some light on how the narrative will play out in the anime. “Based on a world-famous action RPG set in a big open world, Dragon’s Dogma from CAPCOM will be brought to life among the world as a Netflix original series of anime. The story follows a journey of a man seeking revenge on a dragon who stole his precious heart. On his way, the man is brought back to life as a powerful Arisen. An action adventure about a man challenged by ruthless demons who represent the seven deadly sins of humans itself.”
The popular action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma has, over the years, gradually built up its reputation as a classic action-RPG thanks to its compelling mix of open-world exploration and challenging combat. While the game itself has been released on both current generation and last generation consoles, it appears that in the near future fans of the action-RPG will get to experience the series in a whole new way on the small screen.
Netflix has announced in its latest announcement that the network will be partnering with several production companies and anime studios in an effort to expand its current slate of titles of anime hosted on the network, with one of those new series to include an anime of action-RPG Dragon’s Dogma. No release date or window, however, was announced at this time for the anime series.
The series will be produced by Sublimation together with Netflix and will offer “an original game anime series” which is based around the acclaimed video game. The Dragon’s Dogma adaptation would join other anime series that Netflix has in its pipeline of production, including Altered Carbon: Resleeved–an anime spin-off anime series of its sci-fi original series–and Ghost in the Shell: SAC _2045.
For those among us doubtful towards anime, the news is still much exciting: it means Capcom has invested in the anime series, pointing to the potential for a sequel. And given that Hideaki Itsuno has just wrapped up the most popular franchise Devil May Cry 5, perhaps we will hear an announcement sooner rather than later? In a recent latest interview with VG247, Itsuno revealed that it had been only his choice to develop Devil May Cry 5 over Dragon’s Dogma 2, heavily insinuating that the latter comes next.
The announcement of Netflix also included some other projects, including Altered Carbon: Resleeved, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, Spriggan, Vampire in the Garden, and Super Crooks.
